Uniben To Conduct Post-UTME For 2016/2017

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) ADMISSION Screening Exercise for 2016/2017 Academic Session will take place between 27th June, 2016 to 9th, July 2016 in designated centres within Ugbowo Campus of the University. The Screening Exercise shall be Computer Based. All candidates are expected to be seated, latest one hour before the stipulated time for the screening exercise.

PLEASE NOTE: Only candidates who applied through JAMB for UTME Admission and chose University of Benin as First Choice and scored 200 and above are eligible for this Screening Exercise.

METHOD OF APPLICATION

All applications should be done between 7.00am 14th June, 2016 and Midnight 22nd June, 2016.

The procedure for the 2016/2017 Admission Screening application is as follows:

Candidates are advised to have a valid e-mail account before starting the application process.

1.Visit www.uniben.edu

2.Click on Student Portal

3.Click on Register for application at the top left of the display page to proceed.

4.Enter your Surname exactly as written on the JAMB Registration slip and your JAMB Registration Number immediately, your ID and Password will be displayed on the browser.

5. On the https://uniben.waeup.org click on ‘Login’ (top right of front page).

6. Enter your Username and the password to login.

7.To start the application process, please click on ‘Application record’, provide all required information and upload your passport photograph.

8.Upload a RECENT and CLEAR “1×1” COLOUR PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH WITH RED BACKGROUND IN JPEG FORMAT ONLY. NOTE that the photograph uploaded will be the only valid ID for all admitted candidates throughout their stay in the University of Benin. FAILURE TO UPLOAD THE SPECIFIED PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH WILL LEAD TO DISQUALIFICATION and failure/forfeitures of admission.

9.To pay for the Application, click on “Add online payment ticket” at the bottom of the page, then click on “College Pay” on the top left corner of the page, follow the instruction to pay the application fee of N 2,000:00; (The fee excludes other charges), the admission screening exercise past questions for N1,000:00 (optional); excluding Interswitch and Portal Services charges with an ATM-Enabled Verve or Master Card from any Commercial Bank

10.A link is displayed “Download past questions to practice.

11.Preview and confirm your information before submitting your application online. (No correction will be accepted after the closing date).

12.Print out an acknowledgement slip that contains the screening schedule.

Arrested Nigerian Students Still Facing Trial in India

The two Nigerian students from Kano that were arrested in India last year, Sani Jamilu Sani and Imran Kabir, are still facing trial in the country, 10 months after their arrest.

Sani, 25, and Kabir, 24, were arrested on August 7, 2015 by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) near the integrated check-post at Attari, while attempting to illegally cross into the Pakistan.

Sani's mother, Hajiya Ladidi Jamilu Fagge, who confirmed this to Daily Trust yesterday, said the two students were granted bail since October last year.

She said: "Sani intimated me that out of the five charges leveled against them, only one is now hanging on their necks. My son has confirmed to me that they were arraigned for a five-count charge. But so far four charges have been cleared while the court will soon deliver its judgment on the remaining one.

"I am frequently communicating with them on phone. I have spoken with him two days ago and he confirmed to me that the matter has virtually come to an end. I am hoping to reunite with him very soon," she noted.

Hajiya Ladidi commended the federal government for its concern to the students and appealed to the Nigerian High Commission in India not to relent its effort to follow the case to its logical conclusion.

However, she reiterated her earlier stand that the students were not terrorists, reaffirming that "Sani and Imran have never been involved in any form of terrorist activities in their lives."

UNILORIN VC Ready to Offer World Class Medical Education

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, says the university will continue to shop around the world for the best ideas in medical education.

Ambali stated this on Monday in Ilorin while receiving members of the Medical Education Partnership Initiative in Nigeria (MEPIN) in his office.

He said that the management had mounted a concerted effort to make UNILORIN a bit of the U.S., a bit of the UK and elsewhere.

“We look at those bits and pieces that make them better, and we domesticate these in such a way that improves learning in the institution,” he said.

According to him, this is with a realisation that not every Nigerian can afford to send their children overseas to pursue medical education.

The VC pointed out that the Clinical Skills Laboratory at the University’s College of Health Sciences “is one of the best in the world" judging by such facilities available in some of the most advanced countries that he had visited.

He said that it had become a sort of Mecca to medical schools from across the country.

Ambali pledged the readiness of the university “to share our experience and endowments with our peers”, stressing that “it is only the knowledge that is shared that is real knowledge.”

On the issue of skill in writing for grants, the VC told members of MEPIN that the research manager in conjunction with an expert from abroad were already training researchers in the university.

He said that the training was already yielding results with an increase in the number of grants coming to researchers in the university.

Ambali also disclosed that the university’s animal laboratory had just been completed and would soon be equipped to commence operation.

“The university has recorded an increase in the number of foreign and local grants coming to its researchers,” he said.

Ambali said that to guarantee constant power supply for teaching and research, the university invested in a 33KVA dedicated power line that “now guarantees 21 to 22 hours power supply daily’’.

He explained that the university had invested heavily in various plantations such as teak, oil palm, dates and jatropha, in a bid to supplement its resources without burdening the students with fees increase.

“We are investing so that we do not transfer the burden to our students,’’ he said.

Earlier in his remarks, the MEPIN team leader, Dr Wadzani Gashau from the University of Maiduguri, said that the team was at the university on a study-tour of its Clinical Skills Laboratory, adding that “is comparable to the best anywhere in the world”.

“When we came and saw the facility, it was quite gratifying, we are indeed impressed with the set up, the serenity of the environment and the personnel.

“You have a jewel here that could be explored in terms of medical tourism,” he said.

He said that “the potential of the university is great, judging by its holistic approach to education’’, noting that “the university has the best Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure in the country.’’

“The MEPIN provides an opportunity to address many of the challenges facing the Nigerian educational institutions today with the overall goal of improving and strengthening the medical education system in the country.

“MEPIN is a consortium of six universities from the six geo-political zones in the country and its purpose is to enhance medical knowledge and skills in Nigeria,’’ he said.

NYSC DG Says the Ban on Wearing of Hijab in Camps will not be Lifted

Members of Muslim Youths in Da’wah on Tuesday had a peaceful protest at the headquarters of the National Youth Service Corps in Abuja against the ban on the use of hijab by female Muslim corps members, especially during orientation camps.

However the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General, Johnson Olawumi, insisted on the ban, saying it was “for security reasons” and will not be lifted.  The national coordinator of LMYiD, Luqman Hassan; and the Deputy Coordinator, Kamarudeen Adefila, had told the NYSC DG that a major protest by Muslims was averted because of the ban on hijab in most orientation camps.  Hassan told the DG:  “We are here to discuss with you about the incident that happened recently in various camps across the country. We have a guiding principle which is based on the Holy Q’uran. 

We are all Nigerians and the principle which guides us is the constitution and the African Charter on Human rights.  “Members of the NYSC are Nigerians who have contributed to the development of this country; female corps members deserve protection by the NYSC.  We don’t believe that a female corps member putting on hijab has done any wrong against the Act establishing the NYSC. So they deserve the respect of the NYSC.  We have travelled far and wide and visited different camps. Why are the rights of female corps members being infringed upon. We are here to register our displeasure.”

 “Many Muslim organisations wanted to protest, but we said wait a while. In fact, we have to intervene to avoid the situation and if Muslims march on the streets, it will attract a lot of negative comments, but people won’t know why we are protesting,” Adefila had added Olawumi said:  “Under my leadership, the NYSC will accord respect to every corps member, irrespective of tribe and religion.  The incident in Benue State was caused by the use of long hijab.  The security situation in the country is tough. 

There is the danger of somebody using hijab for other reasons.  “Why are you so particular on your alleged infraction on the rights of youths without mentioning any one of such on Christian youths?  Produce your evidence, write to us and I can assure you that we will act fast.  When the incident in Benue State was reported to us, I swung into action and ensured that the camp commandant was decamped immediately. We are not magicians; if you have any evidence, write to us and we will not hesitate to act.” 



The NYSC Legal Adviser, Ahmed Tijani Ibrahim, said the incident in Benue State was still being investigated.  He said,: “I’m a Muslim and in our camps, I know that we have treated everybody equally. You mentioned the fact that you would have proceeded to protest.  Very minor issues could trigger off mass protest. “We will see the way forward to this complaint. I can assure you that the issue will not be swept under the carpet. The NYSC is very sensitive to the issue of religion and immediately we heard of it, we swung into action and we are on it because issues of religion are very sensitive.”

UNN Vice Chancellor To Give Free Laptops to New Students

 

According to Vanguard report, a lot of the students have accused the University management of not having the best interest of students at heart. It was agreed upon that a protest will be staged on Monday, 9th of November, but this was halted when the Union President, Nsukka campus, Comrade Orji Ekene, released a statement on Sunday notifying students of the plan of the Union to meet the VC on Monday to resolve the issue.
Parts of the statement dated 08/11/2015 read: “A powerful but well articulated delegates of the both Union chapters of Nsukka and Enugu campuses will be meeting with the Vice Chancellor tomorrow Monday 9/11/2015 at noon not Tuesday again haven spoken with him on the necessity of making haste while the sun shines”.

In response to the complaints of the students, the school management also released a statement thus: "The University Administration has arrived at the following resolution after an extensive discussion with the SUG. The laptop fee is compulsory for all first years students but there is an option to either pay once or in 3 installments.

” Seventy thousand Naira for those who can pay once. For those to pay over three installments, they will make a yearly payment of N25,000 spread over three sessions. The yearly laptop installment will be added to the student’s Service charge for the affected sessions. All non first year students who want to be part of the laptop program will have to make a one-time payment of 70,000. There is no installment provision for non first year students.”

NYSC Unveils New certificate With Members' Photographs- Naijreporters.com

NYSC unveils new certificate. The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a new National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate that comes with a passport of the corper.

The certificates will be issued at the end of the service year to all corps members. Alhaji Aliu Daura said the new certificate would be embossed with the carrier’s photograph in line with the global best practices. The issuance of the new NYSC certificate would take effect from Batch ‘C’ 2014, who will be passing out on 15 October.

In view of this, Emake Ikechukwu told Naij Reporters about the OSU people in his community, He told our correspondent that the OSU people are found in the eastern part of Nigeria popularly known as the Ibgo’s .  He said “Osu are group of people living in particular geographical area and exhibit common goals, culture and languages just like any other tribe you may think of”. He further disclosed that the Osu people are being marginalized because of an ancient and ancestral myth.

According to Emaka they were made to believe that the Osu people seldom put to birth because of a course that has been laid upon them in ages past. They are regarded as an outcast and are forbidden to marry from the neighboring villages. These people are being deprived of human right activities because of an old fashioned tradition that is regarded as myth in this recent time he said; 

 “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.
