NCC to embark on nationwide raid of MP3 dealers, says DG

NCC to embark on nationwide raid of MP3 dealers, says DG

Abuja – The Director- General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission(NCC), Mr Afam Ezekude says the commission will soon embark on a nationwide raid of MP3 dealers and outlets across Nigeria. Ezekude who spoke in Abuja on Friday, said; “we are set to clamp down heavily on pirates who deal in MP3 across the country’’.

“It is a relatively new form of piracy, and it will no longer be business as usually for people who download and sell other people’s music using the MP3. “This anti-piracy raid on MP3 will state in major cities known to be piracy hubs across the six geo-political zones,” Ezekude said. According to him, the planned invasion of MP3 dealers is to further reaffirm the commission’s zero tolerance stand against piracy in all its forms. He added that the commission was conducting anti-piracy surveillance exercises across major markets and streets within some cities. “Alaba is the hub of piracy in Lagos, so the commissions operations in the South West will be focused on the market within this period.

“Other towns such as Ilorin, Ibadan, Yola, Kaduna, Enugu, Benin City, as well as the Federal Capital Territory will also be checked,’’ he noted. Ezekude stated that the raid would serve as a warning to those planning to venture into MP3 business that it was no longer a lucrative venture. “The era in which pirates enrich themselves through fake products, thereby undermining the sales and distribution of legitimate products is over,” he warned.

He also commended other enforcement agencies, especially the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Customs Service for their collaborative roles in the commission’s fight against piracy. NAN reports that MP3, short for MPEG-1 Layer 3, is a compression standard that can compress music files, while maintaining the same quality. It is this great decrease in size that has attracted the attention of many pirates. With an average modem, it only takes a few minutes to download a song.

This type of device comes in the form of a car stereo, a portable discman type device, and a home entertainment device which will also play DVDs. While the MP3 compression technology is not illegal, the distribution of MP3 files without the copyright owners consent is a violation of the copyright law.

Facebook Launches Free Internet Browsing In Nigeria (See How)

Facebook Launches Free Internet Browsing In Nigeria (See How)

Internet giants, Facebook in collaboration with Airtel, have launched Internet.org Free Basics, a free internet browsing app in Nigeria.  Free Basics is an initiative by Facebook and several other partner companies to deliver zero-rated internet services to the 4 billion-odd people still offline. Facebook reaches out to local telcos and get them to zero-rate certain sites and services that meet Facebook’s criteria.

Naij Reporters
Mark Zuckerberg
“Free Basics offers Nigerians, including 90 million people who are currently offline, the opportunity to access news, health information and services like Jobberman that were built by Nigerians and other developers across West Africa — all without having to pay for data,” Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg said.  Airtel is Facebook’s telecoms partner in Nigeria. As a result, Nigeria will now 37 countries with Free Basic-activated countries.  “We’re pleased to take this big step forward in our partnership with Facebook, bringing more people online in Africa’s most populous country and helping to further narrow the digital divide,” said Airtel Africa CEO, Christian de Faria about the partnership

Critics, some of whom have organized under the banner of “savetheinternet. in” say that the internet.org offers neither the entire internet, nor is it a charitable organization, for which .org domain names are usually used. Facebook responded by changing the name of the service in 2015 to “Free Basics”.

Moreover, the critics argue that if Indians and other poor-world internet internet users spend the vast majority of their time within Facebook’s walled garden, that would force other businesses to set up shop on Facebook rather than on their own websites or elsewhere on the internet. This would give Facebook enormous power over competitors and indeed over the internet.

There is some evidence to show their fears are not unfounded: a survey last year found that millions of Facebook users in the poor world don’t realize they are actually using the internet. Facebook’s critics succeeded in getting Facebook to open up access to Free Basics.    The new regime allows any business, including competitors, apply to join if they meet certain technical requirements.

Top 4 Free Tools For SMEs Owners - An SEO Guide

Top 4 Free Tools For SMEs Owners - An SEO Guide

The amount of tools that we see launching and developing for not only bloggers or webmaster, but also small business and their owners.

Small business owners have a tough job — long hours, uncertainty, taking risks with the hope of rewards. Fortunately, there are countless tools, applications, and software platforms available to help make things easier for people who own or run a small business.
Whether you plan on keeping your business small, want to see more profits, or need to expand in size and scope — these essential tools will help you build, manage, and guide your business on the path to success.

1. Google Analytics

This could potentially be the most overlooked marketing tool that any new or established small business should have. There are plenty of rumours that Google uses Analytics data to rank your website, but whether that is true or not, we are likely to never find out.
Google might say it’s not so, but it very well could be, the huge volume of sites that use Analytics would make it that much easier to make a user friendly search engine.
Google Analytics is free, easy to install on your website, and will give you invaluable insight into how your website is performing and what customers are doing while interacting with your site.

2. MailChimp

Mailchimp is an online email-marketing platform that is easy to use and packed with features. Use it to create, send, and track email-marketing campaigns. You can also manage contacts and segment your customer lists, create automated emails for added efficiency, and measure results with detailed reports to improve success.
This isn’t the only email subscription service/tool out there, there are plenty of others, like AWeber, but I clearly prefer MailChimp, especially because of the free option it offers to new users. Anything up to 2,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails per month is completely free of charge. This is a great offer than any small business should take advantage off – straight away!
You can let your subscribers know about new posts by utilized the Feedburner mail function, like I do on my subscribe page, and the rest of the content, like product launches and new offers can easily be sent through MailChimp – to people who signed up for such news in the first place.
10,000 email subscribers with unlimited emails is only going to cost you $80/per month. Incredible value for one of the greatest email list services out there.

3. Populr

Populr is a service that offers creation of single pages, which we might otherwise know as landing pages. The ideas is that you can create a page for literally anything and point your domain to it. This would be best used when you are preparing to launch a new product, and through Populr you can create an amazing and professionally looking page that will help people understand everything about what you do and your businesses vision.
Things like analytics and pre-made designs come integrated into the service, and with the free plan you will be able to:
  1. Unlimited Published Pages
  2. Point 3 domains at your account
  3. Drag and Drop Editing
  4. Sharing
  5. Collaboration
  6. Video Recording
  7. 12MB Document Limit
  8. Prominent Populr branding
Paid upgrades will let you allocate teams and integrate other analytics solutions like Google Analytics, and of course increased space and sharing limit for documents. Give it a try and see how you like it, it’s free!

3. Analytics SEO

Analytics SEOOne of the most sought after tools out there, are the ones that help you track your rankings on search engines and across the web. Analytics SEO is kind enough to offer a free plan to anyone who is interested.
It’s of course, not a whole lot to play with, but like I said, the tiny amounts can help us test the waters and see for ourselves if the tool we are using is something we’d like to invest our money into.
It’s actually a great business plan and is much nicer than to have a 30Day Trial that simply ends and you cannot gain access to it anymore, not if you don’t pay for it.
I think I have covered most of what I wanted to cover. These really are the tools you should be looking to invest your time into, in order to see what your business might be missing.
It’s all about statistics, analytics and engaging customers these days. Having to do those tasks all by yourself can become incredibly time consuming and stressful to say the least.

NCC Gives MTN Nigeria A deadline On 16 November to Pay N1.4 trillion

NCC Gives MTN Nigeria A deadline On 16 November to Pay N1.4 trillion

As the controversy over the N1.4 trillion fine on MTN lingers, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given MTN Nigeria a deadline of 16 November to pay the fine imposed on it for failing to register the personal details of 5.1 million subscribers.

This deadline is coming after the South Africa’s
stock exchange, JSE Ltd, launched an investigation into the timing of the operator’s announcement of its penalty.

According to a report, the spokesman for the Nigerian Communications Commission, the country’s telecoms watchdog, was quoted as saying that the outcome of the discussion may affect the date.  A statement by MTN said its CEO is still in talks with the Nigerian authorities and its senior management and advisers also talking to JSE, after the announcement of the fine knocked around 20 percent off the company’s stock price.  ‘‘That’s why they are having the discussion so that they can reach a solution,” the spokesperson said.  The report also said Nigeria’s presidency and internal security agency are involved in the talks.

As for the JSE probe, the head of the regulatory division, Andre Visser, said “the investigation will follow due process to establish whether there have been any breaches of the listings requirements and can be a lengthy process.”  Under South African capital markets rules, companies are required to immediately warn shareholders of price-sensitive information.  Meanwhile, Fitch Ratings has revised MTN Group’s outlook to negative, owing “to the risk of a significant cash outflow due to a substantial fine imposed on MTN’s Nigerian operations, which could increase leverage and pressure MTN’s credit metrics.”

LG Nexus 5 2015 Reportedly Launching On September 29

LG Nexus 5 2015 Reportedly Launching On September 29

A South Korean media publication claims that the Nexus 5 (2015) is being lined up for a launch on September 29. With that said, the Huawei-made Nexus has gone missing from the report, presenting no details regarding the launch date of the device.

If the report holds true, we are only a month away from getting our hands on the new Nexus 5 (2015), although it looks unlikely, given Google’s past record of launching its Nexus flagship devices. Over the past few years, Google has rolled out its Nexus device in late-October. While the source remains anonymous, most fingers point towards the same person who predicted the correct launch date for the LG Nexus 5 in 2013.

Nexus 5 (2015) reportedly has a 5.2-inch screen and measures 146.9 x 72.9 x 8/9.8 mm. A Quad HD resolution is said to be in the offering, with 1440 x 2560 pixels. Under the hood, the device has a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, along with Adreno 418 GPU, complementing 3GB worth of LPDDR3 RAM.

The device is said be equipped with a 13MP camera, along with optical image stabilization. A 5MP front-facing camera is set to feature alongside a fingerprint sensor. The device should operate on the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow that should be ready by the time the device gets its finishing touches.
This comes in after images of the alleged LG Nexus 5 (2015) were leaked earlier this week by the Steve Hammerstoffer, the man behind the Twitter account @OnLeaks. Mr. Hammerstoffer is widely regarded as the most reliable source when it comes to leaked news, having a near-perfect track record.
September may be well a festive period for smartphone lovers, given the number of events lined up. The major attractions will be the IFA 2015 in Berlin, the Apple Event, the launch of iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus. Apart from this, we expect to see Sony, Huawei, and a few other companies to launch a few devices.

Samsung Unveils Two New Smart Phone: Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5.

Samsung Unveils Two New Smart Phone: Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5.

Samsung on Thursday unveiled two new devices, the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5.
The smartphones reportedly will be available in the United States starting Aug. 21.
Samsung also announced its NFC mobile payment service, Samsung Pay, will launch in the United States Sept. 28.

The Note5 reportedly incorporates many of the Galaxy S6's features and design elements. It has a glass front and rear, a solid metal frame, a fast octacore Samsung Exynos processor and a high-quality camera.

Unlike earlier versions of the Note, however, the Note5 has a fixed battery, and it no longer supports microSD cards.
These changes may not be a problem for consumers, but "you'll probably hear an uproar from the tech community," said Tuong Nguyen, a principal analyst at Gartner.
"You're getting rid of the phone in two years anyway, so who cares? People are comfortable with upgrading to the latest and greatest device because product releases are so frequent," he told TechNewsWorld.

Specs for the Galaxies

The Note5 is slightly larger and heavier than the S6 edge+. Both have the Exynos octacore 64-bit processor and 4 GB of RAM. They also both have a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super Amoled 2,560 x 1,440 screen with 518 ppi resolution -- but only the S6 edge+ has a dual-edge screen.
Both devices have a 16-MP OIS rear camera and a 5-MP front camera with a focal length of 1.9.
They use a 3,000 mAh battery that offers fast wired and wireless charging.
Both devices offer 4K video filming and let users live-stream YouTube videos in full HD to any smartphone, tablet, PC or smart TV.

Power and Price

One of the most frequently voiced complaints about Samsung smartphones is that they are power guzzlers, but the new models might just resolve that issue.
The Exynos processor uses Samsung's latest 14nm FinFET process and "goes a long way to reduce power consumption," said Wayne Lam, a principal analyst at IHS.
However, the Note5 and S6 edge+ "are still large and relatively expensive," Lam told TechNewsWorld, "definitely more expensive than the base model iPhone 6 Plus, based on pricing I've seen from AT&T."

Taking On Mobile Payments

Both the S6 edge+ and the Note5 support NFC and Samsung-owned LoopPay's magnetic secure transmission.
That combination means Samsung Pay will not be restricted to NFC point-of-sale terminals, as MST will work with any POS terminal.
Samsung reportedly will run an invitation-only beta of its mobile payment technology in the U.S. later this month, and it will fully launch the service Sept. 28.
Samsung Pay initially will run only on the S6 edge+ and Note5. Samsung reportedly will release a free software update for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge later this month.

Nibbling at Apple

The release of the new Samsung phones "is clearly a preemptive move to capture as much attention and press as possible before Apple releases the update to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus," Lam said.
Apple's unveiling is expected next month.
Samsung's Note line "has suffered in the past year with the overwhelming success of the iPhone 6 Plus," Lam observed, and the new devices "are aimed squarely at taking back the market leadership [Samsung] established on large format smartphones."
The Note5 and S6 edge+ are both available in 32-GB and 64-GB versions.
"There's an opportunity for 128-GB models for both devices, but that's not in Samsung's strategy for now," said Jeff Orr, a senior practice director at ABI Research.
"It's a different Samsung now," he told TechNewsWorld.
"They no longer go make a product for a niche market, knowing full well they'll have to cut back at some point," he said. "They don't want to be everything to everyone but want to maintain their brand and their products, and deliver on continuous innovation."
